Canal Futura launches on the Vewd App Store

MIP Cancun – November 17, 2017 – As part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, Canal Futura, one of the largest educational and public interest broadcasters in Brazil, today added its TV app to the Vewd App Store, Latin America’s leading TV App Store. More than 50 million people regularly tune in to Futura’s blend of cultural and educational programming, which is now available on millions of Vewd enabled devices – from smart TVs to set-top boxes to Blu-ray players.

Futura’s launch on the Vewd App Stores comes amid explosive growth of smart TV in Brazil. IHS Markit, a global business information provider, estimates that there was an installed base of more than 14.2 million smart TVs in Brazil in 2016, growing to 19.4 million by the end of 2017*.

“Latin America now sees smart TV shipment share above that of North America and Europe — in fact, second only to China. Furthermore, content creators have been very imaginative in developing content to exploit TV connectivity. As a result, we see a very high connection rate for such sets,” said Paul Gray, research director at IHS Markit.

Seeing this trend and being committed to making their content available on all platforms, Futura chose the Vewd App Store due to its reach in Latin America and beyond. Almost 50 million Vewd enabled devices ship each year making it the world’s largest connected TV ecosystem.

“Futura is delighted to bring the world’s best educational and cultural content to the Vewd App Store,” said José Brito Cunha, Broadcast Manager, Canal Futura. “We are unique in that we are a non-profit, non-commercial broadcaster. Canal Futura is a result of the partnership between private sector organizations, united by the commitment to invest socially and leaders in their segments. Our mission is to ensure our inclusive, participatory content reaches as many people as possible to support the development of Brazilian society. Partnering with Vewd to ensure that content is available across the broadest portfolio of connected TV devices is essential to fulfilling this mission.”

As the reach of smart TV around the world increases, public broadcasters increasingly elect to create branded TV apps. Yet many broadcasters struggle to create and support these apps due to a myriad of different OTT platforms. Futura recognized this complexity early and made their app with Vewd Snap, a free tool that offers the easiest way to make apps for smart TVs and connected devices. Vewd Snap solves the fragmentation problem and ensures that Futura’s TV app works all Vewd-enabled devices regardless of the underlying operating system.

“Futura has some of the richest cultural content on the Vewd App Store and chose a wise path to help it scale,” said Juliana Psaros, Director of Content Partnerships – Latin America, Vewd. “Broadcasters face a difficult challenge when deciding which connected TV device platforms to support. Vewd Snap solves this – in minutes you have an app that will work on tens of millions of devices in the home. Helping Futura extend their content to even more households means we’re fulfilling a bigger purpose in making informative, inspiring content available to everyone.”

Vewd will be at MIP Cancun from November 15-17. To learn more about Vewd Snap, or to schedule a meeting there, please contact Juliana Psaros, Director of Content Partnerships – Latin America, at julianap@vewd.com.
